Medical Cart Case Study

The Client

Our client operates as an international distribution company, servicing the medical industry with high-end medical equipment. In servicing a broad range of clients across the medical profession,
in particular Specialist Theater operating equipment, through dedicated market research efforts in sourcing an expert Australian manufacturer, Metlink was approached regarding the design and manufacture of a theatre ready endoscopy medical cart.

The Challenge

Working to accommodate five different materials composites, sourcing and machining specialist poly-carbonate materials and obtaining individual security locking structures from the USA for medical grade product were just a few of the challenges on the project.

Compact and detailed, the cart needed to feature electrical transformers concealed in the base, hidden IV pole attachments in rounded corner post sections, adjustable shelf heights and special gas bottle compartments at the rear. One of the most challenging elements to the design was the customization of lockable front glass doors and hinges that could pivot 270o during an operation and for them to be held in place with magnetic catches. This concluded in becoming Metlinks most significant achievement in the project.

The Outcome

In working to overcome import costs on such specialist product from either Germany or America, our client felt there was huge advantage in having an Australian made product for the Australian medical industry. Metlink applied its significant experience, creativity and technological service capabilities to successfully design the cart in a rapid time frame of just three weeks, this included sourcing all materials, marrying all design criteria, material requirements and completing a 3D virtual model.

The Solution

During that three-week period, Metlink worked side by side with the client through a series of design briefs; as each problem was solved a 3D model was presented for approval until full and final assembly was achieved. The conceptual images that Metlink was able to provide their client allowed them to go to market with a ready produced concept for approval eliminating the need for expensive prototype manufacturing.

The Result

Metlink offered their client further competitive advantage and flexibility providing bespoke solutions such as adjustable shelving inside the medical carts that not only accommodated their specialist operating equipment but offered practical and interchangeable solutions to a number of theater set-ups.
With a single hospital contract considered successful at a 10-cart sale, this Australian industry first, resulted in the manufacture of over 100 units that were distributed nationally.
